Welcome! I am a PhD candidate in Political Science at Washington University in St. Louis, with research interests in empirical political economy. My research examines the political and economic consequences of technological change and industrial policy, using causal inference, big data, and large-scale randomized experiments. In addition to this primary agenda, I maintain a secondary research interest in historical political economy or quantitative economic history, with a focus on Late Imperial China.
As a PhD Candidate, I am co-supervised by Professor Timm Betz and Professor Guillermo Rosas. Before conducting my PhD at WashU, I earned M.A. in Analytical Political Economy at Duke University in 2022, and B.A. in Economics at Waseda University (Japan) in 2020.
My recent paper has been conditionally accepted at the Journal of Development Economics. My work is also supported by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. You can reach me by email at chen.tian[at]wustl.edu.
